The Anna Ball: A tradition that connects past and present
The first Anna Ball was held on 26 July 1825 at the Horváth House in Balatonfüred. The event honoured Anna Krisztina, daughter of Fülöp János Szentgyörgyi Horváth, who met her future husband, Ernő Kiss, that evening. He would later become one of the generals executed following the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–49 and is remembered as one of the Martyrs of Arad.
It did not take long for the Anna Ball to become one of the defining social occasions of the Hungarian Reform Era, bringing together leading figures from politics, the arts and cultural life.
At the time, Balatonfüred was one of Hungary's most influential intellectual and cultural centres. Statesmen, writers and public figures — including István Széchenyi, Lajos Kossuth and Miklós Wesselényi — were frequent visitors to the Horváth House. Within this vibrant cultural setting, the Anna Ball naturally evolved into one of Hungary's most enduring traditions.
