An exceptionally rare gem is about to take center stage at one of the year’s most prestigious jewelry auctions. The Mediterranean Blue, a stunning 10.03 carat blue diamond, will hit the auction block this May at Sotheby’s High Jewelry Auction — and it could sell for as much as $20 million.
This remarkable diamond isn’t just about looks. Graded Fancy Vivid Blue by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), it boasts the highest possible rating for a blue diamond — a hue as rare as it is striking. In fact, less than 0.1% of all natural diamonds exhibit any trace of blue, making this one of nature’s true treasures.
The story behind a 31 carat diamond
The Mediterranean Blue began its journey as a 31.94 carat rough diamond discovered in 2023 at the legendary Cullinan mine in South Africa — the same mine that has produced some of the most important blue diamonds ever unearthed.
After more than a year of careful study, the gem was meticulously cut and shaped over six months into its final form. Every facet was precisely planned to maximize brilliance and light reflection — the result is a stone that doesn’t just sparkle, it glows with life.
Before its big moment in Geneva, the diamond is going on a world tour
Before it hits the auction block, the Mediterranean Blue will make its world debut in Abu Dhabi this April at the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation on Saadiyat Island. From there, it will travel to Taipei, Hong Kong, and New York, before arriving in Geneva on May 13 for the grand finale.
“The Mediterranean Blue is one of nature’s rarest marvels” - said Quig Bruning, Head of Jewelry for Sotheby’s in the Americas and EMEA. “It’s always special when a vivid blue diamond comes to market — but one of this size and beauty is truly extraordinary. The combination of its carat weight, cut, and captivating blue color makes it one of the most important blue diamonds we’ve seen in recent years.”
Blue diamond: the crown jewels of the market
Rare diamonds always make headlines, but blue diamonds have a particularly magnetic pull. In 2023, the Infinite Blue sold for $25 million, while the 15.1 carat De Beers Cullinan broke records at $57.5 million, becoming the most expensive blue diamond ever sold at auction.
Now, the Mediterranean Blue joins this exclusive club. Whether it reaches the coveted $20 million mark remains to be seen — but all signs point to a historic sale.
